About this course

Spiritual Emergency: What is it?

This brief online course will introduce you to the category of human experience called "Spiritual Emergency".    You will find a one page definition, three video presentations, and two articles--both written by leaders in the field--to help you understand how this category of experience is relevant to your life and the life of those you love and care for.  You may find it very interesting to compare this with the course "Psychosis:What is it?" as many have formerly confused psychosis and spiritual emergency.

When: YOU choose when you want to dip into the materials.  There are no scheduled classes to attend.

Agenda:

  • Quick Definitions
  • An MD Experiences the Neurophysiology of Spiritual Experiences: Tedx Talk
  • Phil Borges: Psychosis and Spiritual Awakening Tedx Talk
  • Video and Slides on Spiritual Emergency: A Unique Presentation by Emma Bragdon, PhD.
  • A More Scholarly Approach: Stanislav Grof, MD article
  • Another Scholarly Article: Nicki Crowley, MD

Course Design: This course was designed by Emma Bragdon, PhD.  Emma wrote two of the classic books on Spiritual Emergency in 1988 and 1990.  She also teaches IMHU's certification course on "How to Effectively Support Someone in Spiritual Emergency".  The course has 5 online webinars and a Practicum.  Emma is the Founder/Director of IMHU.
